What is a CEU?The continuing education unit is a standard of measure for continuing education
or training. Simply stated, it's a way of measuring continuing
education in hour increments. The rules that govern continuing
education units was developed by the International Association
for Continuing Education and Training (IACET). IACET defines the
CEU as ten contact hours of participation in an organized
continuing education experience under responsible sponsorship,
capable direction, and qualified instruction. Or, in other
words, one whole unit or 1 CEU is equal to ten hours of continuing
education. How are CEUs assigned?Your program sponsor applied for
an assignment of continuing education units by sending information
about your program (its length, content, speaker information)
to the NACM National Education Department. The program was evaluated
and CEUs and a control number were assigned. The NACM National
Education Department maintains a database of seminar control numbers. Who keeps track of CEUs?The sponsor of the program you
attend is responsible for maintaining records for seven years.
It's a good idea for you to save information about the CEUs you
earn. What if I attend a seminar and CEUs were not assigned? If you attend a conference or
seminar and it has not been assigned CEUs, it can still be used
for points on the NACM Career Roadmap. Education is education
-- it always counts whether or not is has been assigned CEUs.
But, because CEUs were not preassigned by the NACM National Education
Department, you will need to submit more documentation about the
seminar. You will need to provide documentation about the length
of the program, the content of the program and biographical information
on the speaker(s). Be sure to save a copy of the
program, listing the duration of the program, the content of the
program and information about the speakers. Attach this information
to your roadmap. You should calculate the approximate amount of
instructional time or CEUs, using the formula that one hour of
instruction equals .1 ceu. In other words, a one hour seminar
will be worth .1 ceu, a two hour seminar will be worth .2 ceu,
etc. The NACM AdvantageRemember, participants are rewarded
by attending NACM locally sponsored events with participation
points in addition to CEUs. For example, if you attend a one hour
educational seminar sponsored by a local NACM or CFDD, you earn
.1 CEU and 2 participation points for that event. The point total
is 2.1 on the NACM Career Roadmap.
